Hello hello! It’s been a looong time since I’ve published a blog post – I’ve had many ideas, but also many blocks to realising said ideas! However, I figured I wanted to post something right now, it’s been too long, so I thought I’d start sharing interior designs from my Animal Crossing: New Horizons game. Heck, I’ll probably share some outside areas, too. :]
Chabwick is one of my favourite villagers. I’ve always loved lazy villagers and I think he’s so round, cute and sleepy-looking. I redesigned his house before, but over time I grew to hate it; I made it almost blindingly light blue and cyan, and what felt like clever details and design choices quickly started to feel messy and confused. I finally felt motivated to redesign it a little while ago, and I’d like to talk about what I decided on and why! :]

I like to think deeply about what a villager’s house might be like, considering their hobbies and personality type. It’s interesting to me that they gave Chabwick such a jock-esque home on the N64 despite him being a lazy villager; maybe they initially planned for him to be a jock. I’m reminded of the idea some have that Cranston was originally intended as a jock before being made a lazy villager, due to his catchphrase “sweatband” and his favourite saying, “hard work beats talent”.
In New Horizons, Chabwick has the “play” hobby, which feels apt, and his interior is now that of an ice cream and shaved ice shop. It’s a lot more appropriate for such a food-motivated little guy, especially one that also happens to be a penguin. However, I really prefer my villagers to have functional spaces for homes, else I feel it isn’t a home, so the ice cream shop didn’t last long. That leads me to what his home looks like now, after I updated it in 2025! I made it into a space that I felt he could actually live in and enjoy, with everyday items he can interact with, like the easy noodles on his dining table, his stove, TV and vacuum cleaner. He has the sloppy sink because this boy does not wash his dishes nearly enough. Why else do you think he’s eating instant noodles now instead of a cooked meal? :]
In an ideal world, I’d like to give him a separate bedroom and a bathroom, but in reality… I can only do so much. :’]

To start off, I chose the wallpaper and flooring very carefully. For wallpaper, I chose the sepia puzzle wall, because it felt playful but also subdued – I didn’t want anything too energetic-feeling for this sleepy guy’s abode. I think the fun jigsaw pattern and muted colours achieved this quite nicely! For flooring, I chose the prom flooring for much the same reason; it’s messy, littered with confetti, streamers, and little pops of colour and fun, but the dominant colour is the calm brown of the wood. To me, this means that it adds a comfortable feel and some fun detail, without being too overwhelming or distracting. I like to think that Chabwick gets all his craft supplies out, makes a mess, and then doesn’t clean up properly – very in-keeping with his personality type. I also gave him the paper chains hanging from the ceiling; I like to think he crafted them himself, just like his grandma showed him how. :] He has an extensive spice collection, but I like to think he doesn’t actually know how to use them; they just smelled yummy in the store, so he bought them.
Considering his “play” hobby, Chabwick has a teddy bear by his bed and a Nintendo Switch by his telly, in front of which a very squashy-looking patchwork seat sits expectantly. He can snack on popcorn and soda while he watches cartoons or plays games (I’m not sure what kinds of video games he would like. Maybe Suika Game or Kirby. I feel Breath of the Wild would scare him a bit). A pair of bright, silly socks lay discarded on the ground nearby. Plasters lay forgotten on the floor near the stove and the vacuum cleaner. Perhaps he got a little burnt by the hot water when making his noodles, or got pricked by his cactus, or maybe one of the ants in his ant farm bit his wing.

Speaking of bugs, lazy villagers like bugs. They like bugs so much that they keep ’em in their houses. :] They will often reference them in conversation (e.g., “I overslept a little today. But that’s cool. It gave the bugs in my house some extra quiet time.”, and “… The bugs said they heard you walking this way! And now you’re here! Yay!”) and I want my villagers’ homes to feel true to them. That’s a big part of the reason I gave Chabwick the ant farm (alongside it reminding me of the ant farms I had as a kid). It’s difficult to make a space feel sleepy while also giving it life, but I think bugs are a good way to do that. For Chabwick, I also chose a Madagascan sunset moth and a great purple emperor butterfly. I don’t have articulate reasoning other than: it felt right. :]

When thinking about how I wanted Chabwick’s home to sound, I knew I wanted it to feel calm and sleepy and for the noises to be subtle. I chose the clatteroid and ringoid for this reason; the clatteroid makes an almost building-block-like noise that makes me think of toys, but it isn’t particularly loud. The ringoid makes a calming sound, a bit like a glockenspiel. The record player isn’t switched on.
Now… I think I’ve basically covered most of the details of this remodel. :] I’ll just run through a few final bits and bobs; I gave him the star lights on the wall for nice ambient lighting particularly later in the day/at night; he has comic books by his bed, a light to read them by, and cookies to snack on while he does so; K.K. Birthday is displayed on his wall, because I think birthday parties encompass so much of what makes lazy villagers tick – cake, presents, fun games, friends, snacks, and playful decorations; a candle sits in the corner, keeping it nice and cosy for evening game time; his slippers sit, proudly waiting for him by his bed…

… and if you have an eagle eye, you might spot that his corkboard has a little Ponyo picture on it. I like to think that Chabwick likes the film and relates to Ponyo because she likes food, and she is a dreamer who chose her own destiny. :]
And that’s all, I think! :] Thank you for reading my long ramble about the joyful little details in Chabwick’s home. This game is a fantastic creative outlet for me, and I have a lot of fun with it. See you later! :]
